"Analects of Confucius" The Five Grades of Men
Confucius said: "There are five grades of men: Mediocre Man, Scholar, Nobleman, Sage and Saint. The one who examines these five, will completely rule the path."
The Duke asked : "Dare I ask what can be described as a Mediocre Man?" Confucius said: "A Mediocre man is someone who's lack of cautious mind and standard, doesn't speak model words, doesn't mingle with good and wise friends, has no self determination, sees small matters, loses in big ones; drifts along without own goal. This is a Mediocre Man."
The duke asked: "What's a Scholar?" Confucius said: "The so-called Scholar has faith and plans, although imperfect, he has certain rate of skill; although imperfect in goodness, he has some good quality. His knowledge isn't broad, but deep; doesn't talk much, but know his words; doesn’t do much, but know his deed. Has clear mind, precise words and order. Has intact and independent personality and thought, hardly influenced by outer world. Wealth won't advantage him, poverty is insufficient to harm him. This is a Scholar."
The duke asked: "What's a Nobleman?" Confucius said: "The so-called nobleman speaks honest words without resentment; humble, kind-hearted and righteous by nature; wise, open-minded with reasonable speeches. Coherency behaviour, self-reliance, he looks normal, but is impossible to surpass. This is a Nobleman"
The duke asked: "What's a Sage?" Confucius said: "The so-called Sage lives and behaves along the law, his speeches follow the moral of the world without harming life, his virtue is enough to educate other people without harming fundamental mind. Enriches the world even without money, helps the world to eradicate poverty. This is a Saga."
The duke asked: "What's a Saint?" Confucius said: "The so-called Saint, his virtue and the law of nature are one, changes without trace, seeks the truth of everything, gets along with nature, blends the truth into himself. Is bright like sun and moon, behaves like a god. People don't know his virtue, even they're neighbours. This is a Saint."

孔子曰：“人有五仪：有庸人、有士人、有君子、有贤人、有圣人。审此五者，则治道毕矣。”
公曰(鲁哀公)：“敢问何如斯可谓之庸人？”孔子曰：“庸人者，心不存慎终之规，口不吐训格之言，不择贤以托其身，不力行以自定。见小暗大，不知所务；从物如流，不知其所执。此则庸人也。”
公曰：“何谓士人？”孔子曰：“所谓士人者，心有所定，计有所守，虽不能尽通道术之本，必有率也；虽不能备百善之美，必有处也。是故知不务多，必审其所知；言不务多，必审其所谓；行不务多，必审其所由。知既知之，言既道之，行既由之，则若性命之形骸之不可易也。富贵不足以益，贫贱不足以损。此则士也。”
公曰：“何谓君子？”孔子曰：“所谓君子者，言必忠信而心不怨，仁义在身而色不伐，思虑通明而辞不专。笃行信道，自强不息，油然若将可越而终不可及者，此君子也。”
公曰：“何谓贤人？”孔子曰：“所谓贤人者，德不逾闲，行中规绳，言足以法于天下而不伤于身，道足化于百姓而不伤于本。富则天下无宛财，施则天下不病贫。此贤者也。”
公曰：“何谓圣人？” 孔子曰：“所谓圣者，德合于天地，变通无方，穷万事之终始，协庶品之自然，敷其大道而遂成情性。明并日月，化行若神。下民不知其德，睹者不识其邻，此谓圣人也。”
